Liscio Got Me Hardcore - Graphics and Aesthetics of Italy's Last Folklorist Scene

What draws together Northern Soul and Hardcore Techno's collective dancefloor ecstasy, the Italian radical architecture discotheques, and Federico Fellini's dreamlike visions of Emilia Romagna? Liscio is the answer.

Rooted in the musical and cultural tradition of Emilia Romagna - also the hotbed of Italian clubbing, from Italo Disco to Italo House - Liscio has long been dismissed as a popular, outdated genre with no countercultural appeal.

40 years on from its latest big revival, working on a rare archive of music sheets and photographs Ragazzi di Strada proposes an innovative and unseen re-interpretation of Liscio as the 'lost' subculture of Italian music, and its last folklorist scene.

Drawing on post-subculture theories rooted in the work of the Birmingham Centre for Cultural Studies, this zine aims to focus on Liscio on a conceptual, graphic and aesthetics level.

Some of the themes discussed include, among others, Liscio as a form of socialist resistance to the roaring imperialism represented by Italo Disco; the cross-subculture collective ecstasy that links Liscio to other dance-oriented scenes (here lies the meaning behind the title); and the role of female artists in the scene.
